An oasis is a place where you think you're safe.  But, if you look around, you'll see that you're trapped, surrounded by desert stretching out in every direction.

OASIS
Music and lyrics by Gackt C.
English translation by !Super Cat

I held you until it dawned slowly
I indulged in you until I lost everything

"It hurts me . . ."
I used to make a face distorted by pain
Now even the pain feels warm

But I'd rather be free for a moment
Than spend eternity trapped in an illusion

Spread your wings and fly into the sky
Be the sun before you're burned
The wind flows . . . it will lead you to the sky
Right before you lose yourself

You've been living hollowly, in the past
You'll be slashed to ribbons if you don't move on

If you'd just catch hold of my hands
I could smile

Bask in yellow sand and fly high into the sky
Be the strongly shining sun
Ride the wind . . . spread your arms
Right before you lose yourself

You tremble
Who are you living for?
In order to seek
You have to believe

Spread your wings and fly into the sky
Be the sun before you're burned
The wind flows . . . it will lead you to the sky
Right before you lose yourself

Bask in yellow sand and fly high into the sky
Be the strongly shining sun
Ride the wind . . . spread your arms
And find yourself

Translator's notes:  This song uses the strongest command forms that exist in Japanese, for example, kaze o fuke (blow, wind!), maiagare (fligh high!), or taiyou ni nare (become the sun).  The strength of these commands in Japanese cannot be translated into English, and because of surrounding English/Japanese language incompatability (such as the Japanese, Blow, wind!  Lead [you] to the sky!, which just cannot be made into a coherent sentence in English), I had to cheat occasionally.

Sometimes, the lyrics that Gackt sings differ from the written lyrics.  In OASIS, the written lyrics are kiseki o shinjite (believe in miracles).  But Gackt sings subete o shinjite (believe [in] everything).   This word-doubling adds a layer of meaning, implying that anything and everything around us might be a miracle.  I wasn't sure how to translate this, so I continued the line In order to seek . . . with, You have to believe.

Further notes:  For me, this is a song about going out in a blaze of glory.  The image is of someone using all their energy up to shine for a single, dazzling moment (rather than living "hollowly" for eternity).  The promotional video shows Gackt in the desert wearing nothing but a hessian sack (!), while singing passionately with his arms outflung.  Um, also there's no oasis in the video, probably because it's implied in the lyrics that the oasis of the title is a mirage/illusion.

The only time I ever heard Gackt talk about the OASIS PV was on a TV show during a Gackt retrospective.  Unfortunately, Gackt was in one of his  shut-down/shy/off in his own world/ignoring the interviewer moods.  Asked to explain the PV for OASIS, Gackt said only two words, mitara wakaru ("if you watch it, you'll understand"). Thanks, Gackt.  @_@
